Dr. Amanda

Dentist

I grew up in Freeland, Michigan and earned my bachelors degree from Saginaw Valley State University. After graduation from SVSU, I continued my education at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry to earn my Doctorate in Dental Surgery. Following graduation from dental school, I worked as an associate for 2 years before purchasing this practice from Battle Creek natives, Drs. Dan & Diana Bonfiglio. My husband, Kyle, and I have 3 children - Maci, Brady & Madison who keep us very busy! We also have 2 dogs and one horse. In my spare time I enjoy spending time with my family & caring for perennial gardens when the Michigan weather allows!

Today, I pursue my passion for dentistry by practicing with a unique health-centered approach. I enjoy taking time to get to know each patient, what their individual wants and needs are & how I can partner with them to achieve the level of health they aspire to. I structure my days so I have time to spend with each person to give them the attention & high quality care they deserve.

I have worked as the office/business manager for the practice for 6 years now. I recently took a teaching position at Union City Middle School as a 7th grade math/8th grade science teacher. I'm very excited to return to teaching after years of being out of the classroom. I'm very thankful for the years I was able to help manage the business while being able to devote more time to our children at home. I will miss seeing our awesome team members (we always have so much fun together!) and of course, seeing the wonderful patients who I have grown to know and love over the years. Hopefully I'll be able to stop by for a visit now & then after school or in the summers - to see some of you and catch up!

I received my bachelor’s degree in Dental Hygiene from the University of Michigan in 2004. I then practiced dental hygiene for 10 years in Ann Arbor before returning to Battle Creek. I now work part time for Dr. Amanda as a dental hygienist and also am a clinical instructor at Kellogg Community College in the Dental Hygiene Clinic. I love getting to know my patients better through the time I spend caring for them. I find the health care approach to dentistry very rewarding & I love helping patients to achieve the health that they desire. In my spare time I enjoy spending time with my husband and our 3 girls!

Mimi

Dental Hygienist

I grew up on the outskirts of Traverse City (Leelanau county) where I was raised on my family’s centennial farm. I ventured down to Battle Creek to attend Kellogg Community College where I earned my associate’s degree in dental hygiene. I thoroughly enjoy getting to know each one of my patients and help them achieve their oral health goals. I find it very rewarding when patients learn about their oral health when they visit and apply it at home, to then see positive results at the next checkup. I enjoy spending time with my husband Ben, our one-eyed cats Ashe and Willow, and our rambunctious Aussie - Odie.

I was a Dental Assistant for six years, and after having my first son I decided to be a stay at home mom. Once my boys were a bit older, I returned to the dental field and joined Dr. Amanda's team. I love the friendly atmosphere here and working with all the wonderful patients. I attended Ferris State and received my Dental Radiology Certificate at KVCC. In my spare time I love spending time with my family, biking, kayaking, camping, and being outdoors.

We have two amazing children - Aaron and Jessica - as well as a great son-in-law, Maxx. I enjoy woodworking with my husband and cake decorating. Mostly, I love spending time with family and friends and my precious new grandbaby!

Children's Dentistry

When should your child first see the dentist?  The Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends children see the dentist when their first tooth erupts or 12 months of age.  Early intervention and discussion with pediatric dentistry is recognized as the best method for preventing tooth decay.  Periodic visits starting in the first year of life can get help your child develop a dental home where he or she can feel comfortable at his or her dental appointment.

Baby teeth are important too!  Baby teeth usually fall out on their own starting at age 6.  Their primary role is to provide a guide as the permanent teeth erupt. When baby teeth are lost early to decay, the back teeth (molars) drift forward causing more crowding when the adult teeth finally erupt.

Baby teeth also harbor bacteria. Thankfully, most bacteria in our mouths are healthy.  When kids get decay, they have much higher levels of Strep. mutans (a type of bacteria causing decay).  If families can eliminate or minimize the amounts of these bad bacteria, they will be able to prevent all their teeth from ever having a cavity.

If kids have problems with decay in their baby teeth, this same bacteria will grow on the adult teeth when they come into the mouth.  That is why saying, “It’s okay that my child’s baby teeth have decay, one day, they’ll fall out anyway,” is a misconception.

Cavities can be prevented!  Talk with Dr. Amanda or your hygienist about specific ways you and your family can help manage oral health.

Teeth Whitening

The difference between professional and over-the-counter  whitening treatments.

Non-professional whitening treatments are over the counter products such as strips and toothpaste. These products vary in their price, difficulty of use, and effectiveness.

Philips Zoom professional whitening is a fast, effective, and safe way to whiten your teeth. Your dental professional will either apply the treatment for you, or fit you with customized trays so you can do the treatment at home.

Results from professional treatments can be immediate (up to 8 shades whiter in 45 minutes), and because a dental professional is involved, the process is safe, reliable and hassle free.

Digital X-Rays

Radiographs are used in dentistry to evaluate gum disease, tooth decay, and bone and tooth pathology.  They are a necessary part of a comprehensive dental exam.  It is the primary method for detecting decay between the teeth. The incorporation of digital xrays into our Battle Creek dental practice has allowed:

- Shorter wait times to process the image

- Improved visualization

- Up to 80% less radiation exposure than conventional film x-rays

Intra-Oral Cameras
During your visit at our office, your hygienist or Dr. Amanda may use a device called an intra-oral camera. This is a small camera used for taking photos in the mouth of teeth, gums and tissues. We use this camera to better communicate with you what is going on with your dental health. Whether it is to show you a crack we've found in a tooth or to monitor changes over time in an area of your tissue, we will explain what we find and show you the photos.

This is just one of the ways that we include you in the decisions about your oral health. Communication is the key and we pride ourselves on being excellent at this!
